Queen Eleanor

Its amazing what you can come across sometimes when you are out and about in England. We went to Northampton today to do some visiting and we saw this monument on the side of the road when we were nearly there.

We went to have a look to see what it was and it had a plaque saying that it was one of the Eleanor Crosses.

Queen Eleanor was the wife of King Edward the 1st of England who died in Lincoln in 1290. She was brought back to London, a journey which took 12 days and Edward then had Crosses put up on the spots that the procession stopped each night. This is one of the original three that still remain standing.

This is the Eleanor cross a bit closer up.

If we see any more old stuff when we are out and about perhaps we should call this the Old English Shepherd blog!

That's what I love about England! I spent a few months in London years ago and every weekend I'd go walking all over. I just never knew when I'd walk around a corner and there would be a piece of an 800 year old Roman wall, or St John's Gate or something similar. Love it!

That is lovely. England is rich with history - and it is all so interesting. Thank you for showing us :)

Amazing that it is still there after all that time. A wonderful history lesson and a beautiful cross.

I remember on my vacation to England being amazed at the age of some the places we visited. In the US, a building/monument dating to the late 1600s is super old, but it's a baby compared to the sights in England. I only saw a very small bit of England, I certainly hope I can come back one day! (Lucky me, I did get to see Queen Elizabeth!)

Proud to be British, that's me. I dearly love the ancient buildings and dread the day when or if it all disappears.

1290! Things that old just blow my mind!

Sorry we haven't been around. Well we have been, but unable to comment quite frequently, due to a lousy internet connection.
